Exploration

Recently, at Parkman Hill Farm, the Somerset Woods team has been hard at work assessing ecological as well as cultural and historical value throughout the property. The stone walls and crumbling stone structures nestled through a diverse array of ecologically valuable communities and, in many cases, ecosystems with high biodiversity; these walls, cellars, and old structures create an incredibly beautiful and unique homage to former farmers, hunters, trappers, and everyday Mainers who strived to make the Parkman Hill area their home.

Just this past week, Somerset Woods planted a small bed of native pollinators on the property thanks to a donation of Great Blue Lobelia, New England Asters, and False sunflowers from Ann Dorney. On July 17, the team held our first event at Parkman Hill, thanks in large part to the dedicated efforts of Becky Young! The event was a huge success in giving us an opportunity to meet the community, show the beautiful property that is PHF, and get the input of the community and residents on what this community space should become.

On top of this, the team finally got to break ground on our first trail, a short loop of the Northeast meadow above the farmhouse that offers incredible views of the farm, the meadows, and Lake Wesserunsett. - Ayden
