EMMA HOVENCAMP, COMMUNITY TREE STEWARD
Growing up in Canaan, Emma was raised in a family that placed a lot of emphasis on the natural world around her. Much of her childhood was spent outside, whether it be hiking with her family, chopping and stacking wood with her grandparents, hunting with her father, or gardening with her mother. She worked as a Park Ranger at Lake George Regional Park for four years during high school and partway through college.
Emma graduated from the University of Maine at Farmington in 2024 with a Bachelors in Biology and a GIS certificate. During her time at UMF Emma volunteered at a Moose Check Station in Solon, completed an internship with a UMF professor at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, was a field assistant on American Bushtit research out in Oregon, worked as a licensing intern with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, volunteered for Atlantic Salmon egg planting with the Maine Department of Marine Resources, and conducted creel surveys with the Maine Fisheries Department in Strong. Most recently Emma completed an internship with the Maine Natural Areas Program, where she spent her summer visiting natural communities all across Maine.
Outside of Somerset Woods Trustees and the Maine Conservation Corps Emma can be found outdoors with her family and dog, Bree, or spending time at her local libraries.
In 2025, Somerset Woods is a host site with the Community Tree Steward program at Maine Conservation Corps. This 11-month full-time AmeriCorps position is dedicated to increasing community appreciation and involvement in caring for our forest resources.
