Whitten Woods

NEW PORTLAND

Situated on the scenic Carrabassett River at New Portland’s Historic Wire Bridge, the Whitten Woods project offers the opportunity to conserve an iconic Maine landmark. We are thrilled to be working with the Whitten Family to secure New Portland’s first publicly accessible conservation land.

Located just 20 miles from Sugarloaf - with more than 1 mile of road frontage and 2 miles on the river - the Whitten Woods property has tremendous development potential. Instead, the Whitten Family is working with Somerset Woods to forever conserve the forest they have so carefully managed for generations.

Whitten Woods has it all:

  • 2 miles of of forested shoreline on Western Maine’s Carrabassett River

  • 450+ acres of woods and wetlands

  • Maturing forest, with 100+ year old hemlocks

  • Vernal pools teeming with activity each spring

  • Deer wintering habitat

  • Trails for non-motorized recreation

  • The takeout for the Northern Forest Canoe Trail Carrabassett River trip

  • Hunting and fishing access

Help us complete this landmark project with a gift to the Carrabassett Campaign. With the majority of acquisition funds raised for this parcel, your gift will directly support public access improvements. With continued fundraising success, the Whitten Woods will be purchased in early 2025!

Our thanks to Wire Bridge Photography LLC for supporting the Whitten Woods project with the donation of gorgeous drone imagery.
