Community Tree Steward

in partnership with the Maine Conservation Corps

Somerset Woods is thrilled to be a host site for a Community Tree Steward with the Maine Conservation Corps! This 1700-hour AmeriCorps position extends January to November 2025.

The Community Tree Steward at Somerset Woods will help advance our woodland stewardship goals guided by our strategic framework of conservation, community, and climate resilience. The Tree Steward will increase our property knowledge, build systems to support program growth, and increase community engagement in tree care.

As Tree Steward, you will work with Somerset Woods staff to promote and enhance forest health on conservation lands and increase community engagement and volunteerism in support of urban and community trees. Communities served will include Skowhegan, Solon, Madison. Projects will include:

  • Continued development of a wood bank sourced from management activities on our conserved lands

  • Development of a volunteer program focused on black ash conservation

  • The planting and care of community trees, including a native tree restoration project at Kennebec Banks Picnic Area

  • Protection of forest health and biodiversity through invasive species control

This is a full-time position, with a start date of January 13, 2025.

Benefits include:

Living allowance ($640/week/45 weeks), health insurance, training, and AmeriCorps Education Award ($7395).

Housing:

  • May-November, free, shared housing at our Parkman Hill Farm

  • January-May, housing assistance will be provided
