It is with great appreciation that the Trustees of SWT announce that we have received $3500.00 from the Fund for Maine Land Conservation of the Maine Community Foundation. The money will support SWT's work to increase public awareness of conservation options throughout Somerset County; celebrate SWT's 90th Anniversary; and enhance communication with our supporters. Thank you Maine Community Foundation!

Clinton "Bill" Townsend was everything to everyone. A remarkable man who will forever be missed. He lived 89 years until December 8, 2016 but his impact on our local communities and the state of Maine will be legendary. To name just a few... Bill served on the Natural Resources Council of Maine, the Maine Chapter of The Nature Conservancy, the board of the Trustees of Somerset Wood Trustees, the Maine Land Use Regulation Commission and the Land for Maine's Future Board.

This Saturday the 5th SWT held its first volunteer work day.

Enjoy a picnic lunch with our Trustees, August 17th, at SWT's Kennebec Banks Picnic Area on Route 2 (11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.) and support this scenic picnic area on the river! As many of you know the State of Maine is no longer maintaining the Route 2 picnic area. The Trustees of Somerset Woods stepped up to protect this important and historic community asset. This fundraiser is to help raise funds for SWT's continued maintenance.

Enjoy this Spring with a Paddle to Smith Pond May 22nd (Sunday) Launch Time: 9:30 AM West Branch Wesserunsett Stream (Route 150 Skowhegan) Somerset Woods Trustee Eric Lahti will lead this special paddle event up Wesserunsett Stream to Smith Pond. There should be plenty of wildlife to see along the way. This will be an easy paddle, only about 3 miles round trip. We will provide donuts and coffee to get you started but you may wish to pack water and other beverages.

Hope Douglas, Founder/President of Wind Over Wings of Dresden, ME, will present Maine’s smallest owl, (Saw-whet), largest owl (Great Horned), and the American Kestrel, who is on the Federal Threatened List. Hope will also be bringing the Common Raven, considered the most intelligent of all birds.

JOIN US TO HEAR THE LATEST ABOUT RESTORATION OF ANADROMOUS SALMON IN THE KENNEBEC RIVER April 4 (Monday) at 6:30 PM Skowhegan at the Margaret Chase Smith Library Originating from Moosehead Lake and the Moose River, the Kennebec River flows for 230 miles until it flows into Merrymeeting Bay. Before dams were built along the river, there were bountiful anadromous fish on Maine's coast.

We are so pleased to announce that Kate Drummond has joined our board as a trustee. Kate is currently a science teacher at Skowhegan Area High School, where for the last ten years, she has mainly taught chemistry. A graduate of Carrabec High School (’93) and Brandeis University (’97), she grew up in the shadow of Bigelow Mountain in the town of Highland Plantation, Maine. In 2011, she earned a masters degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of New England.

Nancy Williams of Waterville, Maine has been hired as the Executive Director of the Somerset Woods Trustees. Her background includes land planning, conservation, and land acquisition as well as experience in historic preservation.

Friday, join us at the RT #2 boat launch in Skowhegan, next to the Rest Area.  Boats, paddles and life jackets will be available if for borrowing or bring your own.  The paddle will explore the Wesserunsett Stream up to the dam and back. Join us at the new Coburn Woods parking lot at the Russell Rd access, just .9 miles from the fairgrounds headed towards Madison.  We will join Warren Balgooyan, local naturalist, on the Coburn Woods main trail.  Learn about ferns, wildflowers, wood frogs,mushrooms etc. Dress for the woods and bring repellent.

Ann Dorney, MD is a family practice physician at Skowhegan Family Medicine where she has worked for 33 years. A former representative for District 86, she lives in Norridgewock with her husband, David Axelman. Ann has been a volunteer for SWT in the past, leading vernal pool and bird walks. Her passion for wildlife rescue and many outdoor activities makes her a valued new member to our board.

You are invited to join us for a buffet breakfast at the Evergreen Campground from 7:45 – 8:45 am. Cost per person for buffet is $7.95 plus drink & tax. We will set off at 9am, stopping to view the petroglyphs, and several islands preserved by SWT. Be ready to explore verdant islands (hats, socks, long pants, bug juice, water- all recommended). The trip should take around 3 hours. Join us for ice tea, sandwiches and cookies at the Anson Boat Launch provided by SWT staff.

The parking lot is now finished at the Russell Road entrance to Coburn Woods. Remember to carry out what you carry in. Thank you to all involved: Merritt Burpee - construction, Greg Dore - oversight, Plum Creek, WalMart, Eastman Charitable Trust and LLBean (through MCHT) for grant money to complete this project and all the work of trustees, interns for helping clear the site in preparation for construction! Now people have a safe place to park and enjoy our trails.

“How do the lakes, forests and rivers of inland Maine inspire your work?

Twenty Maine artists respond to this question by submitting work to the 1st land trust art show at the Canaan Farmers Hall, 296 Main St. in Canaan, coordinated jointly by Somerset Woods Trustees and Sebasticook Regional Land Trust called “Saving Beauty”.

The show opens to the public with a Wine and Cheese Party on May 29th from 4:30 – 6:30 pm at the Canaan Farmers Hall, 296 Main St., Canaan.

Somerset Woods Trustees and Sebasticook Regional Land Trust are joining forces to produce "Saving Beauty: a land trust art show".

The Show will be at the Canaan Farmers Hall in Canaan, ME ( on May 29,30,31 and June 6,7.

The question posed to all participating artists is "How do the rivers, lakes, fields, mountains and forests of inland Maine inspire your art?"

Graduate of SAHS, 1971 UMO, 1975, taught Jr High social studies in Pittsfield 1976-1980, taught high school social studies at SAHS 1980-1997, operated a campground at Pleasant Pond in Caratunk 1978-2006, served as a town official in Caratunk 1985-2007, currently a building contractor and camp caretaker, married with two adult children, enjoy skiing and playing the fiddle.

Joe grew up in Sparrowbush, New York along the Delaware River. He graduated from the State University of New York College at Geneseo, Geneseo, NY with a B.S. in Biology in 1994 and in 1996 received his M.S. in Water Resources Management from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry, Syracuse, NY.

Warren C. Shay has been named a Trustee of the Somerset Woods Trustees at a meeting held March 18, 2014. Warren grew up in Orono, Maine and Scarsdale, New York. He graduated from the University of Maine at Orono in 1971. He graduated from the Boston University School of Law in 1974 and joined the law firm of Perkins & Townsend in Skowhegan that same year.
He has practiced law with the firm, now Perkins, Townsend, Shay, Talbot & Landry, for forty years.

Thank you all for coming out and helping make our annual fund raising barbeque for the Kennebec Banks picnic area a huge success

The State of Maine is no longer maintaining the Route 2 picnic area, and this fundraiser helps raise funds for its continued maintenance, as well as assist SWT with the purchase of Pooler Island adjacent to the Kennebec Banks.

Maine Audubon recently launched their "Wildlife Road Watch" program. With the help of volunteers, including runners, walkers, cyclists, and drivers, they are collecting information about where wildlife attempt to cross roads, what animals are involved, and on what kinds of roads collisions are frequent.
